It is commonly told, especially to kids from a young age, not to spend too much time staring at the television or computer as it will damage their sight. Although many people believe that it was only a trick that parent’s used to make their children spend less time in front of the screen, it has been proven that it actually isn’t a myth. Screen overuse has been linked not only to eyesight issues but with many more health problems and conditions. These are some of the disorders that may occur when spending too much time in front of the screen.

Mental Health

Some recent studies have shown that screen over usage can greatly impact peoples mental health. The group that is at most risk of these conditions are in fact teenagers and young children. There have been drastic changes in children’s behavior, mood and also stress levels. Some children that have been tested have been shown to have a much lesser attention span than children who don’t spend that much time in front of the screen.

Also, mood swings, high levels of stress and anxiety are just some of the issues that occur with people who watch too much television or sit in front of the computer. Many children have experienced difficulties when studying and remembering certain things. This can result in poor grades in school which can further lead to decreased motivation, productivity and moral in children and teenagers.

Sleep Deprivation

Although it is still not proven why the usage of electronic devises causes health issues, it is shown that it has great impact and causes sleep deprivation. Some experts claim that the technological era has taken its toll and that people just prefer to spend more time on electronic devices which leaves them with less time to sleep. Others on the other hand, claim that overusing these devices greatly affects one’s nervous system which leads to sleep deprivation.

People who tend to overuse electronics have been known to have difficulties with falling asleep but also with getting enough sleep altogether. Not getting a fair amount of sleep every night can significantly affect ones health. This can result in poor productivity, motor functions, but can also weaken ones immune system and make it more prone to illnesses and diseases.

Perhaps one of the most spread issues with screen over usage are eyesight issues. Spending too much time in front of the computer or any other electronic device can greatly damage the eyesight. Some people may experience a burning sensation in the eye area, but also dryness or itching. Blurred vision is also one of the problems that may occur. Another issue that people may encounter is age related macular degeneration which is one of the leading causes of blindness and vision loss.

Also, migraines and heavy headaches occur quite often and may be connected to certain eyesight issues. Some studies show that people nowadays are developing eyesight issues much more than it was in earlier times when technology was not developed so much. Also, it is said that children develop these kinds of issues from a much earlier stage in life, as it became so usual for every child to have a mobile phone and even a tablet.

Physical Health

There are also some physical problems that may develop. For instance, fatigue and languor have been known to affect many people who spend most of their days in front of the screen. Also, neck and backaches are quite common. Many people experience pains in the spine area and can develop some more serious problems if not treated on time. This is mostly typical for people who work at the office and are obligated to spend most of their day in front of the computer.

Also, it is known that many people and children, who spend a good amount of time in front of the screen, watching television or playing video games, can be disoriented and dizzy. When it comes to adults, this can greatly affect one’s ability to manage heavy machinery, drive a car or do something similar from that line of work.

Certainly, when it comes to issues like these, it is much better to try and prevent them before they turn into something more severe, which is quite possible. For instance, it is quite recommendable to limit the amount of time we spend in front of the monitor. This is especially important in the case of children and teenagers. It is a good idea to design a plan for every member of the family on how much time is allowed for watching TV and using the computer.

If it happens, that your work consists of sitting in front of the monitor all day, make sure to get a fair amount of breaks to rest from the constant radiation of the screen. Just by turning your view on the other side for a couple of minutes, you will contribute to your health. Also, take your time to sit up, stretch and even just walk around a bit. It is very important to change your posture from time to time in order to avoid some back and spine issues.

Although some of these issues can be solved if addressed on time, it is certain that a fair amount of these problems are not fixable unless they are taken with caution. There are some methods that can be used to treat or a least alleviate the symptoms, but most of these issues are quite hard to deal with when they already appear. That is why it is much better to work on prevention than it is to work on the treatment itself. For instance, there are certain medications that people use to ease their migraines and pains that they experience.

Also, some physicians can recommend certain exercises for back problems that might help with the pains and the posture. When it comes to eyesight, laser eye surgery has proven to be quite effective for dealing with this problem. But it is certain, that it is much better and healthier just to try and avoid these treatments by leading a more conscious lifestyle.

Even though the technological era has its benefits and it does enable people to work more efficiently, it is certain that it has its downsides as well. It is really important to perceive all the aspects and learn about the negative effects that it may have on your health. Consulting with a doctor can help in making the best decisions when it comes to protecting your health and preventing some serious problems from occurring.
